Cooling with All-Air-Systems often leads to combined cooling and dehumidification of the air to be supplied to the building. If the surface temperature of a cooling coil is below the dew point of the air stream entering the coil, water vapour condenses at the coil’s surface. Cooling coils connected to chilled water systems running at temperatures of 6/12 degree C (43/54 degree F) usually experience condensation of water vapour already at outside air humidity ratios as low as 6 g/kg. For central European climates unintended dehumidification requires about 10% of the overall cooling energy. This talk describes a strategy that allows the control of dehumidification based on thermal comfort rather than on chilled water temperature only.
