E. O. Lawrence is credited with developing big team science as well as the cyclotron. Key to Lawrence’s success was the close coupling of scientists and engineers. Starting with Bill Brobeck, the Lab’s first chief engineer, Berkeley Lab’s unique matrix Engineering Division and continues to marry science and engineering. The value and strength of the Engineering Division to Berkeley Lab is the ability to marshal its entire breadth of expertise as necessary in addressing the development of defining state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation and facilities. This seminar will summarize briefly the history of the Engineering Division; its breadth and depth of capabilities. Successful strategies for fully exploiting the Engineering Division in leveraging the scientific program and initiatives at the Lab will also be discussed.
