The Don Vial Center on Employment in the Green Economy recently completed a year-long study for the CPUC which looked at the labor demand and workforce training infrastructure for jobs in energy efficiency and related sectors in California. The study was mandated in the state's Long Term Energy Efficiency Strategic plan to provide recommendations to the CPUC and other agencies on the workforce strategies needed to achieve the state’s ambitious energy efficiency goals. This presentation will outline some of the key findings of our research, and then present a proposal we have submitted to the Berkeley Energy & Climate Institute (BECI), Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at UCB. The proposal outlines a project to examine the workforce issues that could affect the success of emerging clean energy and energy efficiency technology and its impact in the market. We seek input from our colleagues at LBNL to help us to determine what these emerging technologies are, how to establish whether they have passed an acceptable threshold of commercialization.
