
Climate change, the rapid surge in energy demand and dwindling natural resources present Germany with major challenges in the field of energy supply. The E-Energy project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) in an partnership with the Federal Ministry for Environment (BMU) and aims to secure an economical and environmentally compatible supply of power for all public and private sectors. New integral system solutions are called for, in which information and communication technologies (ICTs) will play a key role. Example solutions for an energy Internet will be set up in six model regions in Germany for the first time. It is hoped that the solutions will quickly have a sweeping bandwagon effect and trigger follow-up investments. The aim here is to create a smart electricity system, which will extensively control itself and in which all energy-sector processes are optimally adapted to one another. This reliable, efficient infrastructure leads the pathway towards an energy mix where at least 80% of the electricity is produced by renewable energy resources. The speaker will give an overview over the current research focus in these model regions and will present results on the project's effort to implement a standardized bus- and communication-system for future smart grids.
