This presentation discusses developments (and test-beds) of micro-grids and distributed generation systems that are on-going in Singapore and poses the question as to whether simpler versions of such systems would be applicable to meet the challenges of rural electrification and energy poverty particularly those of its closest neighbors. Southeast Asia is an ethnically and culturally diverse region comprising more than 10 nations where 160 million people still live without electricity. Off-grid electrification for rural village communities and eco-resorts using DG and micro-grid systems are conceivable but many technical, political, cultural and economic hurdles remain. This presentation also aims to shed light on some of these issues and explore possible solutions.
