The Internet exists today because of core protocols that enable it to operate (e.g. TCP, HTTP, ARP, DHCP, etc.). These are defined and maintained by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The IETF recently created a working group on Energy Management (eman), which had its first meeting last week. Putting energy considerations and features into core Internet protocols could be very helpful in future as more and more types of devices gain IP connectivity. Bruce will review the nature and structure of the IETF, the goals of eman, proposals for the standards it will define, outcomes from the meeting last week, and review other work in the IETF related to energy. The intent is to keep the presentation brief to allow plenty of time for discussion.
