In the past 3 to 5 years computer equipment power in a standard data center IT rack increased to the point where cooling using conventional methods is becoming difficult. A demonstration of alternate cooling equipment from 8 companies was recently completed. The tests used real IT equipment running production type software loads. The power levels tested ranged from 11kW to 110kW. This presentation includes descriptions of the test methods, evaluation metrics and results of 11 different tests investigating energy use efficiency. The devices tested consist of three types: rack, in-row and passive rear door. The heat transfer designs varied and consisted of two types: air-to-water and air-to-refrigerant. The presentation will provide: - test methods - energy efficiency evaluation metric development - test results - conclusions - recommendations for energy efficiency - (if time permits) a future view of data center operation (by Prajesh Bhattacharya) Prajesh Bhattacharya and Henry Coles are working on a proposal on “Holistic optimization of data center operations.” They would be presenting a brief overview of the existing problem with data center operations and the proposed solution thereof; and finally ask for your thoughts on it.
