
Fuel Cells have long held the promise of efficient, reliable, clean, quiet electricity generation "at some point in the near future." Conventional ceramic Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) have achieved a high level of technical refinement, but market success has proven elusive. Over the last decade, LBNL has developed an alternative metal-supported SOFC architecture, based on very low-cost materials and fabrication techniques that may be uniquely commercially viable. The device contains thin layers of the active ceramic materials on an extremely strong stainless steel support. Significant challenges related to co-processing ceramics and steel, and high-temperature operation of the steel support have been addressed. This talk will discuss the unique advantages of metal-supported SOFCs, research highlights from the development of the state-of-the-art cell architecture, and market opportunities.
