
The modeling, simulation and analysis of integrated building energy and control systems poses challenges that are not well addressed by standard building simulation programs. This seminar discusses how modular system modeling can address these challenges. We present recent research and development in equation-based object-oriented building system modeling based on the Modelica language. We present how the higher level of abstraction of this language facilitates the construction of more complex models in shorter time compared to using conventional modeling approaches. We demonstrate applications that are outside the scope of standard building simulation programs. To be able to link the more modern approaches with existing programs, we developed the Building Controls Virtual Test Bed that allows linking simulation programs during run-time for an integrated analysis. The approach and implementation of the Building Controls Virtual Test Bed will be presented together with applications that it enables. We close by presenting R&D needs of the above technologies.
