Blasting photon torpedoes with a video Gamepad may seem like an odd way to commission a lighting control system. But Wayne Morrow, Director of Technology of Starfield Controls, thinks that injecting a little fun into otherwise tedious processes can revolutionize how we design, construct and operate buildings. Historically, the building industry has been slow to embrace new technologies and concepts, and electrical installers are largely unfamiliar with digital control technologies. For a lighting controls company to be successful in such an environment not only requires that the products and systems be robustly designed but also that the hardware takes into account the lack of sophistication at all stages of building design, construction and operation. Wayne’s background in Architectural Engineering and Accounting/Finance helped him design DALI based building controls and develop DALI-based equipment, software, and firmware that are highly fault-tolerant and robust. Starfield also uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) to prepare all its bid documentation. GSA and other large institutions are increasingly looking to BIM to allow sharing of databases and information amongst all the stakeholders. Other techniques, such as interactive drawing, simulated operation and a gaming interface designed to commission newly commissioned lighting systems will be discussed in this presentation.
