Dave Najewicz of GE Consumer and Appliances will discuss GE's current program developing demand reduction (DR) enabled appliances (Smart Appliance). These appliances communicate with an AMI via the zigbee smart energy profile (using several different physical layer options). The DR appliance respond to signals from the utility (via AMI) and take the appropriate actions to minimize the demand of the appliance. These appliance, at the homeowners option, could be incorporated into a home energy management ( HEM) system also under development at GE. The HEM will provide real time energy (water and NG) monitoring to the consumer, as well as manage the integration of residential PV, other on site generation and storage. The development of the DR appliances and the HEM support GE's vision of a zero net energy home. GE is currently leading the NIST H2G working group, charged with developing standards and protocols for in home communications. Mr Najewicz will discuss GE activities in each of these areas.
