Grid scale energy storage is a pivotal technology for our energy future. Not only will abundant grid scale energy storage provide increased reliability, efficiency and security to the electrical system, it will also create a crucial foundation for the wide spread integration of non-CO2 producing generation technologies. Unfortunately, currently available energy storage technologies are not suited to these large scale bulk energy storage applications because they share a universal flaw... they are far too expensive to be widely deployed given current market pricing of electricity. Velkess Inc. has recently demonstrated a novel energy storage technology based on the flywheel or electromechanical battery, that is able to store energy and provide high availability power at 1/10th the cost and 2x the efficiency of the leading chemistry based solutions. This presentation will begin with a discussion of the importance of grid scale energy storage to a clean secure energy future and then describe Velkess's novel energy storage technology, explaining the techniques and attributes that enable it to provide energy storage at such low cost.
