Recent trends toward globalization, outsourcing, and compressed cycles of innovation and new product introduction have all increased the pressure for instant, error-free exchange of manufacturing and business information around the world. This talk will identify some of the technical barriers to achieving this goal, and avenues for overcoming those barriers. While this work is grounded in the manufacturing sector, these same effects challenge most sectors, including health care, the electrical grid, construction and capital equipment. The talk ends with a comparison of engineering disciplines in the physical world with engineering in the information world.
