
UC San Diego is pursuing an aggressive energy infrastructure program incorporating distributed generation, demand response, advance energy storage, and smart grid capability. Included in the highly leveraged projects are 2.4 MW of methane-fired molten carbonate fuel cells, 1 MW of 16% efficient PV, a demand response system with a demonstrated capability of >40% load cutback with a 2 hour ramp time, an optimization between legacy campus cogeneration gas turbines and surplus wind energy from the grid, and major energy efficiency investments. The seminar will describe existing systems and explain future plans at this living laboratory, including efforts to add 10 MWh of electricity storage for peak shaving.
