
A large fraction of the energy used in the built environment is consumed by ventilation, heating and air conditioning. The energy efficiency of buildings can potentially be increased through a combination of reduced outdoor air supply and the implementation of air cleaning technologies for the removal of airborne pollutants. Air cleaning, unlike ventilation, can also reduce indoor exposures to outdoor air contaminants. This seminar will discuss current studies at the Indoor Environment Department, which evaluate the operation of air cleaners that rely on TiO2 - UV photocatalytic oxidation of indoor pollutants. We will identify benefits and key limitations of current technology, and discuss strategies for improving air cleaner performance.
