In the talk, the Safety and Environmental Technology Group at the Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, is presented. The group deals with four main topics: life-cycle assessment of chemicals, chemical process assessment and optimization, small-scale reaction calorimetry, and exposure-based hazard screening of chemicals. The overarching concept of the group is presented and examples from the four areas are given: a comparison of two pesticides based on life-cycle assessments including production and use phase, comparisons of chemical technologies in terms of economic profit and environmental burden, the combination of calorimetric and infrared signals to determine the kinetics of a chemical reaction, and multi-compartment models used to calculate the environmental distribution dynamics of chemicals.
