The seminar will summarize the design of the Australian National Electricity Market and discuss opportunities for demand-side participation. Essentially, three kinds of opportunities are provided. One is to respond to the very high spot prices that can arise in the electrical energy spot market, which has a hybrid 5 – 30 minute market interval and a price ceiling of AUD10000/MWH. A second is to be accepted as a distributed resource alternative to network augmentation and a third is to participate in ancillary services markets. The seminar will present the key market design features, then review experience to date and describe plans for future development.
