Dr. William M. Smith is the Manager, Market-Driven Demand Response at EPRI. He is responsible for developing information, tools, and technologies that will enable electricity customers to benefit from customer choice by taking an active role in balancing electricity supply and demand. In 2001, he developed a third-party demand response program that contributed over 60 MW towards mitigating the California Power Crisis. He also spearheads a new Water & Sustainability Initiative that seeks to mitigate limitations on economic development and electricity supply & demand caused by water supply/treatment restrictions, while enhancing and protecting water resource environmental values. This initiative anticipates providing solutions through new water management planning tools and novel water management technologies. It will include the development of frameworks for integrating macroscale (e.g., watershed) and microscale (e.g., facility, municipality) planning and technology applications.
