The recent DOE announcement of a new ”FreedomCAR” program to speed the development of electric vehicles powered by fuel cells has generated considerable interest. Fuel cells and batteries have distinct advantages and disadvantages, and it is timely to discuss the respective barriers to their widespread use in electric and hybrid vehicles (EHVs). We will present an analysis of fuel cell efficiency and prospects, and describe critical problem areas facing the development of rechargeable lithium batteries for use in EHVs.
