Is the human capacity to consume energy and materials endless?  How much of a role does consumer demand play in current problems of climate change, environmental degradation, and resource depletion?  In this paper I argue that we really know very little about consumption, and we lack any adequate theory to explain it. I offer some explanations for this sad state of affairs, and suggest some ways that more useful and robust models of  consumption could be constructed.
