Lean (excess air) premixed combustion is the cleanest way to burn natural gas. As part of our research on fundamental fluid mechanical processes of premixed turbulent flames, we have developed two burner technologies that have great promise for practical use. These burners are capable of supporting very stable ultra-lean premixed combustion with very low emissions of nitrogen oxides. Both technologies have been successfully demonstrated with emission levels substantially below the stringent AQMD rules for Southern California effective in 2000. The design of the low-swirl burner has also been scaled up to 1 MW and recent testing has demonstrated that it is also adaptable to an industrial gas turbine combustor environment. This seminar will present a brief introduction to the principles of the technologies and an overview of the technology transfer research. Also discussed will be non-technical issues encountered on the often not-so-smooth road to commercialization. For more information about this seminar, please contact: Rich Sextro(510) 486-6295
