The industrial sector accounts for approximately 45% of global primary energy use. Recent energy analysis efforts in the industrial sector have begun to quantify potentials for reducing energy use and associated carbon dioxide emissions in heavy manufacturing. This talk will focus on the U.S. iron and steel industry, illustrating how it compares internationally and describing the construction of an energy conservation supply curve for the sector that identifies cost-effective energy savings of 16% of 1994 U.S. primary energy used for steel production.
