Electricity Markets and Policy > Staff > Chris Marnay

Chris Marnay is a staff scientist in the Electricity Markets and Policy Group. He leads Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's work on distributed energy resources (DER) both in support of CERTS Microgrid development and more generally through policy analysis of small scale on-site generation with combined heat and power (CHP) applications. The current focus is on modeling of restructured energy markets, especially on problems concerning adoption of DER by individual customer sites and colocated customers grouped into, microgrids. Analysis of DER adoption encompasses small scale power generation and CHP systems, notably absorption cooling. Customer adoption behavior is simulated using the DER Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM), which was developed by this group. Other ongoing work includes maintaining the latest version of the Energy Information Administration's National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) and directing its application to various research topics related to power sector development, expansion of renewable generation, and greenhouse gas emissions abatement. Chris began working at LBNL in 1984. He has an A.B. in Development Studies, an M.S. in Agricultural and Resource Economics, and a Ph.D. in Energy and Resources, all from the University of California, Berkeley. He has also studied at the London School of Economics and the University of Hawaii, and has worked at the University of Texas at Austin, and in various consulting capacities.
